Goals of this project:
  • to provide adolescents with a global writing community
  • to give students an authentic audience for their writing
  • to offer opportunities for students to practice giving meaningful feedback to other authors
  • to learn about cultures and communities different from one’s own

Duration: September 2011 - June 2012

Target Grade Levels / Age Group: Grades 6-12 (12-18 years)

How this project works:
Students around the world will contribute original writing based on one or many of the following themes:
  • My life
  • Change
  • Family
  • Friends
  • Choices
  • Fairness
  • Courage
  • Survival

Students are encouraged to submit their written work but to also record themselves reading their work or to compose original digital stories on one of the themes. In addition to posting their original work, students post in the discussion area about what motivated them for that particular piece and what kind of feedback they would find most helpful.

In classrooms that don’t yet have completed original compositions, students can serve as an authentic audience for pieces published by other students. Providing positive feedback to other students’ work using the Authentic Audience Guidelines is also a great way to get students involved.

Some details:
  • Teachers interested in joining this project should request membership to the Authentic Voices wiki:
  • Teachers then provide a list of student names, usernames and passwords in the required format so that students become members of the Authentic Voices wiki.
  • Teachers can also choose to use their own account to post students work when it is preferable.
  • Every effort would be made to maintain this wiki as a safe and respected writing space. When possible, students would sign contracts outlining the kind of thoughtful, nurturing learning we want to take place.
  • When students post their work they should add a tag for the theme their writing addresses as well as the school year 2011-2012.
